The borough of Shillington, PA, covers one square mile of land in Berks County, just a few miles southwest of Reading and some 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Known as “The Town Beautiful,” Shillington today houses a population of roughly 5,300 people.
Shillington came to exist in 1860 as part of Cumru Township when the area had a thriving inn known as the Three Mile House, built a century earlier. A post office opened in Shillington in 1884, and the borough was officially incorporated in 1908. Shillington has long been known as the location of Angelica Farm, home to Pennsylvania’s First Governor, Thomas Mifflin, in the 1700s. In the 20th century, Shillington gained further notoriety as the childhood home of author John Updike.
