The borough of Shillington, PA, covers one square mile of land in Berks County, just a few miles southwest of Reading and some 60 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Known as “The Town Beautiful,” Shillington today houses a population of roughly 5,300 people.

Shillington came to exist in 1860 as part of Cumru Township when the area had a thriving inn known as the Three Mile House, built a century earlier. In the 20th century, Shillington gained further notoriety as the childhood home of author John Updike.
